A little about Becca

Like most people I'm a lot of things, to name a few: I'm a wife to Andy and a mom to Tyler and the companion to my rescued Australian Cattle Dog, Braun. I have a passion for photography that just won't quit. I believe there is always more to learn and I take the time to continue doing so, through both reading and classes. When I'm not spending time with my family, editing pictures, at my full time job, I'm probably sleeping (gotta fit that in somewhere). I just celebrated a "big" birthday. I love spending time outside, I love it even more when it involves a mountain, a lift, and my snowboard, watching my dad yard sale across the mountain is just an added bonus. So now you know a little about me, and I hope to get know more about you. A little about my gear: I shoot with all high quality Nikon ditigal equipment. I have a main and back up camera, so no worries there. I also have off camera flash and some great lenses, everything I need to capture all those special moments. I edit all my pictures using my trusty MacBook Pro, Adobe Lightroom 3 and Adobe Photoshop CS4. A little about this site: Instead of having both a blog and a website I have found an option that combines both into one. So please look around and come back often as you will be able to see my latest work through my blog below. At the top of the page you will find links to my portfolio galleries. I love comments so please leave me one. The picture you see of me being silly is courtesy of Andi Grant Photography. Thanks for visiting, hope to see you back soon

Changes….

Posted on January 24, 2012

2012 is a year full of changes for my family, good changes, but changes none the less. I feel like right now I need to insert a disclaimer, so here it is, NO! I am not pregnant. It seems like that’s a common presumed thought to moment you say that changes are in store for your family. We are very happy as a family of three and will continue to be this way for the foreseeable future.

My big personal announcement is that I will be starting down a new career path come Feb. 16th. I am making the move from being a 911 dispatcher to becoming an Animal Control Officer, still with the City of Virginia Beach. This is something that I’ve been interested in for quite some time and am incredibly excited to see it come to fruition. This move will impact my schedule in several different ways. First, I will no longer be working midnight shift, and I can tell you, I’m not sad to see that go. Second, I will have some more time to spend with my family and be in a better mood (woohoo!). And third, I will have less time for my business.

Obviously the third reason is why I’m posting here. I will still be shooting, because I love it and it’s a passion for me. The difference is what I will be shooting. I’m going to start focusing my business on portrait photography, specifically high school seniors. I’ve always felt that it’s incredibly important to have a niche as a photographer, it sets you apart. I think shooting everything and anything is a great way to learn, but going to a website and seeing a little of this, a little of that, and a little of everything else, doesn’t really work for me, I would really like to see one thing done well, as opposed to several things done okay. I’m not saying that there aren’t photographers who can’t shoot well in most aspects of photography, because I know there are, but not every photographer can. I know I’m not a good landscape photographer, and that’s okay with me, and I think what’s most important is that I at least realize that fact. As a wedding photographer, while I try and maintain a photo-journalistic approach, I also know that my portrait skills have to be just as good, if not better. This is one reason why so many wedding photographers specialize in both wedding and portrait photography, one thing lends to the other. That being said, I’m going to focus on the portrait side of business. I have lots of plans and ideas, one of which involves using part of my now unused barn as a studio. I cannot wait to start revealing some of my plans and showing off what I’ve been doing.

I have a bunch of weddings (as in my entire 2011 season) to post on the blog still, I’ve made sure to post them to Facebook, so I’m planning on really doing one large post full of my favorites from the 2011 wedding season. I’ll also be revamping my package options for portrait photography. So for those of you who know an up and coming high school senior please send them my way, spring is coming and it’s a great time to get those photos done, it’s not to late for the class of 2012 to get pictures either. Thank you so much to all of my family, friends, and clients who have been supportive of myself, my family, and my business. I look forward to seeing or hearing from all of you in the coming year.

If you are looking for a wedding photographer and came across my page, please still fill out the contact form and I will be sure to send you information on a couple of other fantastic area wedding photographers.

I really believe that no blog post should go without photos, so here are some of my own family from our portrait session right before Christmas. Credit goes to the fabulous Jennifer Warthan of Warthan Farms Photography

The three of us…

My beautiful little girl, she just turned 4 on the 12th, hard to believe it’s been 4 years

Me and my honey, today is his birthday, he’s a wonderfully amazing and supportive husband and father, God chose so well for me, I’m blessed.

I’m looking forward to a fantastic and exciting 2012 and I hope to see some of y’all along the journey.

Virginia Beach Engagement Photography ~ Cora and Derrick

Posted on April 5, 2011

I’ve known Cora for over 10 years now, which made it so that when she came to me asking about engagement photos I was shocked. How on earth did that happen? Needless to say I figured it out, so we spent some time planning and arranging schedules and I finally got to meet Derrick. We had a great time at Munden Point Park, they also brought along their dog Peanut for a few “family” shots.

Suffolk Engagement Photographer ~ Joe and Ashley

Posted on March 26, 2011

I had been looking forward to working with Joe and Ashley for some time, their engagment was a few (ahem, ummmm 10) years in the making, so needless to say I was very happy for my friends. Yes, friends! Joe was one of Andy’s groomsmen and Ashley was a high school friend of Andy’s, she also did my makeup for my wedding. When Ashely asked me about photographing their wedding I had to stop myself from doing a happy dance, okay well, I may have not completely stopped myself, but that’s another story. We managed to squeeze this session in just over a month before the wedding, which means shortly you will be seeing their amazing (if I do say so myself) wedding photos. We spent a couple of hours walking around downtown Suffolk for this session. Downtown Suffolk is pretty cool place to shoot, lots of older, interesting buildings, neat signs (see below), and interesting architecture.

Norfolk Engagement Photography ~ Caitlin and Ryan

Posted on March 14, 2011

Caitlin and Ryan are high school sweethearts, college sweethearts too. I had a great time with them walking around Waterside in Downtown Norfolk. I have to say that I am very much so looking forward to their wedding this July. From everything Caitlin has shared with me it’s going to be pretty awesome, check back in July for the rest of their photographic story.
